Spirited Away is an animated fantasy movie directed by Hayao
Miyazaki that tells the story a young girl named Chihiro who becomes stranded
in a bathhouse run by various other worldly creatures. Her parents are turned
into pigs, which leaves her with no one turn to. She is helped by a boy named
Haku and slowly tries to find a way to save herself and her parents from the
clutches of the bathhouse owner Yubaba. The story is extremely well told and although
the pacing can be a bit slow, it actually benefits the mood and tension of each
scene.
Miyazaki is known for his distinctive art style and I think
this is one of the most polished films he's ever released. It is probably on
par with Princess Mononoke, but I think the backgrounds blend with the
characters much better than some of his other works. As far as negatives for
Spirited Away, I think Chihiro's voice can be a little irritating when she
yells (which is often) and Haku's revelation at the end was a little confusing
to me the first time I watched the movie. I hope you can let Spirited Away take
you away on a magical journey.
Trivia: Spirited Away was the first anime film to win an
Academy Award.
