American Movie (1999)

American Movie is a documentary directed by Chris Smith which stars Mark Borchardt and friend Mike Schank as they attempt to fund and film a movie. The film starts with Borchardt working on a project titled Northwestern, but his priorities eventually shift to a making a shorter film entitled Coven. This all may sound like a relatively boring or basic plot, but it is extremely funny to watch the people in this movie. Mark is so overly confident and unaware of the situations that he is in and Mike just seems like he isn't paying attention to anything that is happening.

It is so hard to explain this movie if you haven't seen it. The sentences that come out of Mark's mouth are so hilarious and so quotable. I would say it's worth watching for the dialogue alone. Another reason I think this movie is worth your time is how it can actually feel very relatable if you've ever worked on a film project. Having your friends and relatives play parts, having no one really understand what you're making, and losing your mind trying to figure out how to finish it. This is my vote for the funniest and most depressing documentary ever made, I really recommend it.

Trivia: The word "man" is said 151 times by Mark....man.
